One Showcase
One showcase for both Langley and Vancouver student's.
This year, we're bringing the whole family together and will be hosting one showcase on Sunday, June 9th, in Vancouver for both Vancouver and Langley student's :) Some things to note with this change are...
1. We'll have 3 sets (2:15pm, 4:45pm and 7:15pm), starting with the youngest to oldest, to accommodate the amount of performers.
2. Only Langley student's using the band will perform at the Vancouver showcase, otherwise they'll perform at aloha unplugged in Langley without the band.
aloha Unplugged
Langley only | Sunday, June 2nd
Introducing aloha unplugged! As an alternative to performing in the big city with the band we'll also be hosting an unplugged showcase for Langley students only wanting to stay local. Aloha unplugged will take place in none other than Porters Bistro - right below the studio.
The Band
The band, which includes professional musicians playing drums, bass, guitar (electric and/or acoustic), piano or keyboard, is highly recommended! Their aim is to support students during their performances, like the Grammy’s :) Playing with a band is an essential musical skill and a great learning opportunity.
The band fee is $15 per musician per song, with a minimum of 3 musicians required. The selection of musicians will be partly determined with the guidance of the student’s coach. By choosing the band, you would agree to have your payment type on file charged. The band fee ranges from $45 to $60 (3-4 musicians). All fees are non-refundable upon submission of the sign up form.
*Please note that it's essential for students using the band to attend the band rehearsal. Your time slot is subject to availability and will run for around 15min.
Save the date for the band rehearsal (exact time TBD)
Vancouver students - Saturday, June 8th @ Song of Stars Vancouver
Langley students - Friday, June 7th @ the Molnar’s studio (4843 216A Street, Langley)

DO I HAVE TO PERFORM AT THE SHOWCASE?
Not at all. Showcases are totally optional! Participation is highly encouraged though. Performing helps students grow by sharing the music they’ve been working on with friends and family as well as learning how to face any fears of being on stage.
HOW MANY SONGS CAN I PERFORM?
As much as we’d love to have students perform all the song’s their heart desire’s we do have to limit showcases to 1 song per performer (even if taking 2 disciplines from other coaches). The show ends up running too long if we allow students to do more than one song and we do our best to accommodate everyone involved.
CAN I PERFORM AN ORIGINAL SONG?
Oh yes! Those are some of our favorite performances
I HEARD I CAN HIRE A BAND TO BACK ME UP?
Yes, If you are playing or singing a lead, we encourage using the band! The band, which includes professional musicians playing drums, bass, guitar (electric and/or acoustic), piano or keyboard, is highly recommended. Their aim is to support students during their performances, like the Grammy’s! Playing with a band is also an essential musical skill and a great learning opportunity.
IS THERE A MINIMUM AMOUNT OF MUSICIAN’S THAT NEED TO BE HIRED WHEN USING THE BAND?
Yes, there is a minimum of 3 musicians required.
IS THERE A FEE FOR THE BAND?
The band fee is $15 per musician per song. ($45 minimum).
DO I NEED TO ATTEND THE BAND REHEARSAL BEFORE THE SHOWCASE?
If you’re using the house band, then yes, you need to attend the band rehearsal. Practicing with the band is very important before a showcase for both the student and the band and we want you to be as excited and prepped as possible. Each performer is scheduled in 10-15-minute rehearsal blocks with the band, running through their song 2-3 times. You are welcome to record your run through with the band on your own devise.
IF I’M NOT USING THE HOUSE BAND, CAN I STILL COME TO THE BAND REHEARSAL?
Band rehearsal is only for the house band and those students using them. The hired musicians are getting paid for this time and the rehearsal space is being rented as well. To keep things on budget and not to waste the time of the hired musicians, this practice is limited to just those who will be performing with them. Note that band rehearsal is held at a different location than the showcase.
HOW DO I HIRE THE BAND AND WHICH INSTRUMENTS DO I PICK FOR MY SONG?
When filling out the sign up form you’ll be asked if you’d like to hire the band. Afterwards, together with your coach, you will choose which musicians you’d like to hire. Payment for the band (based on the number of musicians used) will later be charged to your account.
CAN I PERFORM TO A TRACK OR INSTRUMENTAL RECORDING?
This is a purely “live music” event so no tracks needed or allowed. That’s also why we also really encourage using the house band.
WHAT’S THE DRESS CODE IS FOR THE SHOWCASES?
The dress code for the showcases is “The Best Version of You”. This is a great opportunity for you to dress as the rock star you aspire to be. However, our showcases cater to a diverse audience, including individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Performers are encouraged to dress in a manner that is respectful of this diverse audience, ensuring that attire is appropriate and suitable for all attendees. We kindly ask that students refrain from wearing attire that could potentially detract from the focus on musical talent and creativity, including attire that may be deemed overly sexualized or controversial.
CAN I REQUEST TO BE IN A CERTAIN PART OF THE SHOW SET LIST?
While we can’t promise exact placement, there is a bit of room to request being placed either in the 1st or 2nd part of the set you’re placed in (There are 3 sets based on age going from youngest to oldest). To request this please chat with your coach directly and they will put a request in for you. The showcase programs and order of the event goes to print 2 weeks prior to the showcase. Any requests past this deadline can’t be accommodated.
WHEN AND HOW DO I GET UP ON STAGE?
Performers will come up to the “side stage” the performer before them on the program. They will wait backstage during the performance before theirs and prep for their song.
DO I NEED TO BE AT THE SHOWCASE EARLY FOR SOUNDCHECK?
Only students using the house band may be asked by the band director to come earlier before the showcase to do a soundcheck.
DO I NEED TO BRING MY OWN INSTRUMENT (I.E. UKULELE, GUITAR)? AND IF SO IS THERE SOMEWHERE I’LL NEED TO PUT IT?
There will be a piano or keyboard at the venue for you to play. If you’re performing on a guitar or ukulele and your instrument doesn’t plug into the sound system with an instrument cable you will need to use one that does. In the case that your instrument doesn’t plug in, we will have a stage ukulele or guitar for you to use during your performance that is plugged into the sound system.
If your own instrument does plug in (i.e. an electric guitar) please make sure to bring your instrument (all tuned up) to the stagehand when the doors open along with an instrument cable and your guitar amp (if applicable). Instruments will be put backstage or on the stage ready for performances.
WHO INTRODUCES THE STUDENTS?
After being invited up to the stage by the MC, we ask for performers to introduce themselves (first and last name) along with the name of the song they will be performing. Adding a fun fact or other info so the audience can get to know you more also adds a nice touch.
CAN I PERFORM WITH MY MUSIC ON STAGE OR DO I HAVE TO HAVE IT MEMORIZED?
No lyrics are allowed (or highly discouraged) for vocal students that are singing only – please take the necessary time to memorize your lyrics. On the other hand, if you’re playing a complicated musical solo where sheet music is needed, that’s allowed. Also, if it’s a complicated song with tricky chords and can’t be done by memory, that is allowed as well (if need be). Remember the goal is to perform and connect with your audience which is difficult to do if you’ve got a music stand in front of you and your eyes are glued to your music.
